Villanelles

Please post your original villanelles here!

Definition of Villanelle:
A 19-line poem consisting of five tercets and a final quatrain on two rhymes. The first and third lines of the first tercet repeat alternately as a refrain closing the succeeding stanzas and joined as the final couplet of the quatrain. Villanelles also gradually build in tone and intensity from one stanza to the next.

Example/Mentor Text:
This is Dylan Thomas' "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night." It is one of the most famous villanelles and, while Thomas does not experiment much with the form, the poem is a great example of how villanelle repetition works. The boldface and italics are there to more easily show the repeated lines and demonstrate the structure of the poem.

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night,

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night,

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

  1. Bruises

They appear like buds in early morning, deeply aching,
their tint unmistakable for dirt. This one begot from that misstep,
each with its own history, a pedigree of hurt to wear.

I did not deserve them, but here they are, like temporary tattoos.
Magnified under shower streams, and an honest olive green,
they appear like buds in early morning, deeply aching.

What did I do to deserve this pain? Where do I go for help?
Nowhere. No one would believe. He is not meant to give bruises,
each with its own history, a pedigree of hurt to wear.

Every week I think I am safe on Monday, but by the end of the day
darkness falls and I’m afraid again. To speak, to be alone, to sleep.
They appear like buds in early morning, deeply aching.

Hidden under jeans in hot weather, my mother would never notice
the man she loves prefers to torture me. I don’t crave these mementos,
each with its own history, a pedigree of hurt to wear.

I put on makeshift fathers like I do my long sleeve jackets
to hide what he’s grabbed, cover them up, escape the flashbacks, but,
they appear like buds in early morning, deeply aching,
each with its own history, a pedigree of hurt to wear.

  2. Do Not Give Up

    Do not give up,
    If you do give up,
You will never know what you’ll become.

    Why give up?
    The payoff is so great,
    Do not give up.

    Finish the race,
Only a few more hills and miles,
You will never know what you’ll become.

    You can do it,
    Two more miles,
    Do not give up.

    No one is better,
    Work hard,
You will never know what you’ll become.

    One more mile!
    You did it, you won!
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

  3. Running From the Future

Please do not grow up so soon,
    The future can wait but this moment cannot;
    Stay, stay away from tomorrow.

    Although college is important,
It does not have to be right now,
Please do not grow up so soon.

As you apply and take your tests,
We wait and wait and hold our breath,
    Stay, stay away from tomorrow.

Remember the days when we used to play,
You were always just a phone call away,
Please do not grow up so soon.

Now the campus tours, the graduation caps,
When you move away, everything will change,
    Stay, stay away from tomorrow.

First my sister who is now on her way,
Next my cousin to follow this path,
Please do not grow up so soon,
    Stay, stay away from tomorrow.

  4. My Sister
    My sister holds me tight
    My sister kisses me goodnight
My sister is in my heart and will always stay in my heart

My sister knows when I’m mad
My sister helps me when I’m sad
    My sister holds me tight

    My sister loves me lots
    My sister ties the knots
My sister is in my heart and will always stay in my heart

My sister I have until this very day
My sister I wish her luck everyday
    My sister holds me tight

My sister knows when I lie
My sister knows if I’ve cried
    My sister holds me tight
My sister is in my heart and will always stay in my heart

  5. Dreams

    Dreams tend to talk
    Today there here
    Tomorrow their not

    I’ve seen some fade
    Despite a tear
    Dreams tend to talk

    If they are built
    But not kept near
    Tomorrow their killed

    They can just be separated
    With just a remark
    Dreams tend to talk

    But have no guilt
    Nor feel the sadness
    Tomorrow their killed

    A dream can move
    A dream can dim
    Dreams tend to talk
    Tomorrow their dead

  6. Paralyzed in The Dark

The sun is hiding away and the darkness is falling minute by minute
My heart is pounding faster and faster
To turn off the lights is like dying inside

I can almost see their hollow eyes
I can almost feel them near me
The sun is hiding away and the darkness is falling minute by minute

Their bodies aren’t visible to me
They float in the corners blending in with the dark
To turn off the lights is like dying inside

The only thing I can see is their hollow pitch black eyes
They make no noise until I’m asleep
The sun is hiding away and the darkness is falling minute by minute

They get close when I’m asleep and they don’t let me breathe
My body is paralyzed and my voice is far gone
To turn off the light is like dying inside

Now all I can do is pray and pray, pray for them to go away
I don’t want to feel trapped again
The sun is hiding away and the darkness is falling minute by minute
To turn off the light is like dying inside

  7. Dreaming
It’s like it was all so real,
The laughter, the parties, the fun times,
It was all just a dream.

    Just when you think,
You’re having a good time, you realize
It was all just a dream.

The dance we did when we seen
    Each other, how we smiled
It’s like it was all so real.

I shut my eyes and the stars shine bright,
Feeling like the moon was smiling down at me,
But it was all a dream.

    Day turning into night,
    Night turning into day,
It’s like it was all real.

But then I notice, it was a dream.
A sweet dream, where everything was perfect.
It’s like it was all real,
But it was all a dream.

  8. It’s all in God’s plan.
Needles hooked up to an IV, chemotherapy every two weeks, yet
blessings all around; she knows this is just the beginning.

    Some people have survived it;
    I’m worried she won’t.
    It’s all in God’s plan.

    She knows in her heart
    somehow she’s protected.
    Blessings all around.

I was too young to remember.
I just hoped she would live, but
    It’s all in God’s plan.

She survived ten years being free.
She’ll never be able to thank God enough.
    Blessings all around.

    “Mom, I love you.”
I said it then and say it now.
    It’s all in God’s plan.
    Blessings all around.

  9. Sea Bound

I'm cast out to sea with lack of direction, with faith in whoever will listen.
A communion I used to take part in that's now exhausted, dies.
The remains of you will not benefit me, and I possess no power of resurrection.

I cannot tell you, Mother, where I am or where I've been.
My map is drenched and it's readings cannot be deciphered.
I'm cast out to sea with lack of direction, with faith in whoever will listen.

I've prayed a thousand times, and I've cried a million.
God's sailing my rugged ship, though I lack knowledge of His plan.
The remains of you will not benefit me, and I possess no power of resurrection.

Evidence of your selfish addiction burns my skin, and it might have been my fault, but
you've still created a monster of me, cheated me of my innocence and the beauty of bliss.
I'm cast out to sea with lack of direction, with faith in whoever will listen.

I pray by the grace of God that one day, you'll change, to see that exhilarating smile,
the green in your eyes which captivate me; I would willingly sink into their abyss.
The remains of you will not benefit me, and I possess no power of resurrection.

I could never harm you, but I am leaving. An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind and
I love you far too much to ever wrong you. I hope my absence proves that I am hurt enough to escape,
though I'm cast out to sea with lack of direction, with faith in whoever will listen.
The remains of you will not benefit me, and I possess no power of resurrection.

My friend has two big dogs,
They are each hard to train,
Each hard to pull like a resting fallen log.

They jump on people like bears,
Their heavy weight like a great dane,
My friend has two big dogs

Their clear fence sized like a lair,
Their white fur look like a lion’s mane,
Each hard to pull like a resting fallen log.

Run away from their owners they dare,
quickly and wildly like their insane,
My friend has two big dogs.

When we give them snacks they care,
Trying to eat them out of our hands in vain,
Each hard to pull like a resting fallen log.

They would love to chase after nearby hares,
Though with company it is not possible when there is possible pain,
My friend has two big dogs,
Each hard to pull like a resting fallen log.

  11. My Villanelle about Proof
What kinds of names do you give your lust?
When you call yourself dreaming of another at night?
That kind of truth, one does not trust...

Underneath a clean tongue, such confessions will rust.
A word in vain is a consequence kept from sight.
What kinds of names do you give your lust?

Your money, your mind, your possessions of dust…
You've put into practice the things that ensure your plight.
That kind of truth, one does not trust.

    The last time you cared enough for this powerful gust;
The selfish things you whispered became the things you'd write.
"What kinds of names do you give your lust?"

How the affections of your heart could never adjust
When you forced your love to be something that was white.
That kind of truth, one does not trust.

    As close to the lies, the wasted feelings you've discussed;
When you looked her in the eye and felt that your body wasn't right.
What kinds of names do you give your lust?
That kind of truth, one does not trust...

  12. Misunderstood

As I grew up I was really confused.
Did you love me or did you hate me?
But as I grew older I knew I had misunderstood.
Little things would get me in trouble; I always thought to myself, “why me?”
I always wondered what it would be like to be somewhere else.

Regardless of what happened I always tried to smile through it all.
I always wanted to ask, “What does it feel like to have a son that doesn’t like you?”
I always wanted to say, “Dad I would never want to be just like you.”
It did not matter what the case was, school or soccer I would just get in trouble.
I would listen to what I did wrong in the game all day.
I continued to just smile through it all.

As I started to grow up, I thought maybe you were tired of screaming at me.
I would get in trouble still but it was much less.
I did really great in soccer.
I made Varsity my freshman year and I was also a starter.
I never saw you more proud.

Now that I am older I don’t get in trouble anymore.
Now I realize I have the best dad I could ever ask for.
I now realize that all the screaming was for my own good.
You were scared of me not being successful.
You wanted the best of me.
And now I am thankful, I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for my dad.
    I love you dad.

  15. Far Away

We sat there on the sidewalk
You put your hand in mine
No matter how close, you were still far away

You told me you liked me
    I said it too
We sat there on the sidewalk

I could tell you were scared
You didn’t want to be hurt, yet you didn’t want to be alone
No matter how close, you were still far away

God took you away on that day
Yet I still remember one thing:
We sat there on that sidewalk

I never planned on losing you
This is all part of God’s plan
No matter how close, you were still far away

Today marks two years since you’ve passed
All I ever think about was that last day
We sat there on the sidewalk
No matter how close, you were still far away

I remember how we were once close
    Now, we no longer speak;
    That’s just life I suppose.

It is the path we have chosen,
It’s the life we now lead
I remember how we were once close

I remember times that seemed frozen,
    And we were all we could be;
    That’s just life, I suppose.

I suppose it goes to show,
What we’ve seen and what we know
I remember how we were once close

We make a face and strike a pose,
    And help a friend who’s in need;
    That’s just life I suppose.

    Through our lives we rose

    Deceitful losing all trust

    Everybody taking it for granted
    Do not trust anybody

Giving people your love and care
People just throw it away like its nothing
    Deceitful losing all trust

    Women give you their love
Just to play with your emotions
    Do not trust anybody

They get torn by everything they thought was true

    Simple smiles crowd the room,
    Tears run down everyone's cheeks
As the sparkle fades from his eyes.

A part of him wants to tell them,
Tell them death isn't as bad as they think but
    Simple smiles crowd the room.

He thinks back to his childhood,
To the playground of his youth
As the sparkle fades from his eyes.

    Seeing family around him
Wishing to spend another lifetime with them.
    Simple smiles crowd the room.

    Tears cloud his sight
    While time flies by,
As the sparkle fades from hie eyes.

Can you remind me why some people want to grow up?
I'm content with the life I live, even if you call me a kid.
Being an adult really doesn't sound all that great to me.

We live a life of little responsibility.
We can sleep 'till noon without consequences.
Can you remind me why some people want to grow up?

    The real world is harsh and cruel;
It is full of unfairness and no second chances.
Being an adult really doesn't sound all that great to me.

We wish for a life with more respect and responsibility,
But we have no idea what we are getting ourselves into.
Can you remind me why some people want to grow up?

In our world, Twitter followers means more than a job.
We really aren't ready for the real world.
Being an adult really doesn't sound all that great to me.

    By wishing away our youth,
We are wishing away our innocence, energy, and our fun.
Can you remind me why some people want to grow up?
Being an adult really doesn't sound all that great to me.

Your hope and faith may drop but,

A life with troubles that seem to worsen,
All starting the day she was born,
But still she smiles and doesn't give up

Bullied and teased by the age of five,
For the lisp she spoke with.
A life with troubles that seem to worsen,

    Such pain for her age, hurt and broken;
It all follows her and never leaves,
But still she smiles and doesn't give up.

Now she comes to a home,
Were no motherly arms await her.
A life with troubles to seem to worsen,

She tried dealing with the pain coming at her,
It was hard to cope with,
But still she smiles and doesn't give up.

It hurts her, the pain life brings,
It's the sad truth, it's what she has.
A life with troubles that seem to worsen,
But still she smiles and doesn't give up.

  30. Pursuit of Happiness

I'm going towards goals that I want to succeed.
I refuse to give up when I'm not pleased,
As I keep swimming towards success

    Through happiness and sadness,
I've had my ups and downs
I'm going towards goals that I want to succeed.

Facing tough challenges became a daily routine.
To me challenges are just an extra step in my life,
As I keep swimming towards success.

Giving up is not an option.
I'm on a one way ticket to pursuit my happiness.
I'm going towards goals that I want to succeed.

I'll do whatever it takes to get to the top
    There's no turning down now,
As I keep swimming towards success.

My goals are big and I stand strong,
As I look into every day that goes by
I'm going towards goals that I want to succeed
As I keep swimming towards success.
